Stay united, must not stop social intercourse: Tarique Rahman
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has urged all political parties in Bangladesh to remain united on issues of democracy and national interest, despite ideological differences.
Speaking virtually at a victory rally in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on Wednesday (August 6), he emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation among political forces.
“We may have disagreements, but political parties must not stop social intercourse,” he said. “To defend democracy and address national issues, unity is essential. Religion, philosophy, opinion—these are personal. But the state belongs to all of us.”
Tarique Rahman’s remarks came as BNP marked what it called a symbolic “victory rally,” celebrating recent political momentum. He framed the event as “a journey out of darkness and into light,” reflecting on what he described as years of authoritarianism.
He warned that fascism had previously turned the country into “a barbaric prison,” stripping citizens of their rights, particularly the right to vote. “During fascism, we were not safe. Our children were not safe. This was the result of the absence of democracy and the rule of law,” he said.
Calling on citizens to remain vigilant, Rahman stressed the urgency of protecting democratic institutions. “Now is the time to take a decisive stand to build a safe, democratic Bangladesh,” he declared.
Highlighting the momentum created by the “24th movement,” he said it must be utilized to empower the people politically and economically. “If we succeed, no one will be able to reestablish fascism or turn Bangladesh into a subservient state. We must ensure that we never see another bloody 24th.”
Rahman concluded by seeking the support and cooperation of all citizens in the effort to restore democracy and the rule of law, framing the current political moment as a turning point for the nation.
