Step-by-step approach needed for journalists’ welfare: Information Adviser
Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam has emphasized the need for a phased approach to ensure the welfare and protection of journalists across the country. Speaking at a group insurance agreement signing ceremony at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium in Segunbagicha, he said while several laws, regulations, and institutions have already been established for journalists’ welfare, bringing all media professionals under a unified framework remains a complex challenge.
“The process must advance step by step. Alongside government initiatives, support from private institutions is also essential,” he said.
Mahfuz Alam highlighted the government's ongoing efforts through the Journalists’ Welfare Trust, which is providing regular financial assistance to journalists every three months. He also mentioned initiatives such as scholarships for journalists' children and plans to expand the scope of the Social Welfare Trust.
“Living costs in Dhaka are significantly high, yet many journalists are forced to work for low wages. This may lead some towards unethical means of livelihood,” he noted, adding, “Ensuring a dignified life for journalists is crucial.”
The Information Adviser further informed that the government is working on drafting a Journalists’ Protection Law and implementing the Ninth Wage Board, although the process involves multiple ministries and is therefore complex.
“The current government is making its best efforts. Even if the work is not completed during this term, the next government will certainly carry it forward,” he said.
He stressed the importance of creating an environment where journalists can live and work with dignity, ensuring both family and professional security.
During the event, a group insurance agreement was signed between DRU and National Life Insurance PLC for the benefit of DRU members.
Notable attendees included Bangladesh Insurance Association President Sayeed Ahmed, National Life Insurance PLC Managing Director Kazim Uddin, DRU President Abu Saleh Akon, and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel, among others.
