The Bangladesh Army has stated it will take strict action against any of its personnel if evidence confirms their involvement in incidents of enforced disappearances.

Colonel Md. Shafiqul Islam, Staff Colonel of the Military Operations Directorate, addressed the issue during a press conference held at Officers' Mess 'A' in Dhaka Cantonment on Thursday afternoon (July 2).

"When army members are sent on deputation, they operate outside the direct command of the army. There have been allegations of involvement in disappearances. If proven through investigation, the army will take appropriate disciplinary action," Colonel Shafiqul said in response to questions from journalists.

He also reassured victims' families, saying, "If anyone seeks help from the army regarding their safety, we will provide assistance as needed."

On the upcoming national elections, Colonel Shafiqul stated that the army has not yet received any instructions from the Election Commission. However, he emphasized that the army is prepared to assist in ensuring free and fair elections if called upon.

Addressing recent concerns over weapon looting from police stations, he noted that around 80 percent of the stolen arms have already been recovered. "We are optimistic that the remaining 20 percent will be retrieved before the elections," he added.

Regarding efforts to curb juvenile gang violence, Colonel Shafiqul said the army has so far arrested more than 400 gang members. "We cannot be present in every alley, but we are acting swiftly whenever we receive information."

In the last two weeks, joint operations have led to the recovery of 26 illegal firearms and 100 rounds of ammunition. Since last August, a total of 9,692 weapons have been seized in army-led operations, he confirmed.
