Storm likely in 12 regions including Dhaka

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain in 12 regions of the country by this evening and advised river ports in the affected areas to display cautionary signals Nos. 1 and 2.

The information was disclosed in the inland river port forecast issued by meteorologist Dr Md Omar Faruk on Thursday (May 21).

According to the weather bulletin, the regions of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail and Mymensingh may experience temporary rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty or squally winds blowing from the west or northwest at speeds of 60 to 80 kilometres per hour by 6:00 pm. River ports in these regions have been advised to hoist cautionary signal No. 2.

Meanwhile, the regions of Dhaka, Faridpur, Kushtia, Jashore, Cumilla and Sylhet may witness temporary rain or thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 45 to 60 kilometres per hour. River ports in these areas have been asked to display cautionary signal No. 1.

In its morning forecast, the weather office said many places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with temporary gusty winds over the next 24 hours. Isolated rainfall is also likely in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.

The forecast also warned of moderate to heavy rainfall at places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions.

Meanwhile, mild heatwave conditions are sweeping over the districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Sirajganj, Dhaka, Tangail, Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Jashore, Chandpur and Lakshmipur, and the condition may continue.

The weather office also said both daytime and nighttime temperatures across the country may fall slightly.
