Storm warning issued for 17 regions, river ports hoist signal No 1

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has advised river ports in 17 regions to hoist local cautionary signal No 1 due to the possibility of gusty winds and thunderstorms. At the same time, the department has forecast rain in most parts of all eight divisions and moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places in seven divisions.

The forecast was issued in a special bulletin for inland river ports, valid from 5:00am to 1:00pm on Tuesday (July 21).

According to the Met Office forecast, temporary gusty or squally winds, accompanied by rain or thunderstorms, may blow from the south or southeast at speeds of 45-60 kilometres per hour over Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar and Sylhet regions. River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No 1.

Meanwhile, the 24-hour weather forecast published on Monday night said that until 6:00pm on Tuesday, light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds may occur at most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

The Met Office also said moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at some places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions. Day temperatures across the country may remain nearly unchanged, but night temperatures may drop slightly.
