Strict ban on use of hydraulic horns, hooters

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has reiterated a strict directive stating that no motor vehicle, except those used for state emergency services such as ambulances, fire service and rescue operations, shall be permitted to use hydraulic horns, hooters or any other unauthorised horns.

In an emergency notice issued on Monday, the BRTA said that according to Rule 81 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022, the installation, reinstallation and use of multi-tone horns or any device producing loud, harsh, sudden, shrill or frightening sounds is completely prohibited in any vehicle other than designated emergency service vehicles .

The authority warned that violation of this directive will result in strict punitive action against those concerned under the existing law .

According to the BRTA, these unauthorised horns not only cause public suffering but are also harmful to public health. Additionally, the deafening sounds encourage reckless and high-speed driving, increasing the risk of road accidents .

The notice further stated that the rampant misuse of hydraulic horns and hooters in various private and commercial vehicles has made public life unbearable. To control this situation, the BRTA has urged all to refrain from using such horns in motor vehicles, except those designated for emergency services.
