Abdur Razzaq bin Sulaiman alias Riyad, the student leader who gained notoriety for attacking students and creating unrest, has been arrested by police once again.

Earlier, on July 26, 2025, Riyad was arrested in connection with an extortion attempt at the residence of former MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan.

On Thursday evening, February 26, he was arrested along with three others from the Presidency University area.

On Friday, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi ordered the accused to be sent to jail. March 1 has been set for the hearing on bail in the case.

According to police and the case complaint, students of Presidency University were holding a peaceful protest on Thursday afternoon demanding a permanent campus. Riyad, a former leader of the anti-discrimination student movement, went there and attempted to divert the movement. During a discussion about the matter in the university proctor's room, the other accused, on Riyad's instruction, beat a student named Nijhum Sardar Bandhan with a chair. Riyad then attacked Bandhan's face with a switch gear knife he had with him, intending to kill him, severely injuring the upper part of his nose.

With the help of teachers and students present at the scene, police quickly arrested them. The victim student filed an attempted murder case at Gulshan police station, naming 11 individuals and including 10-22 unidentified others.

Gulshan Police Station Second Officer Kader Ahmed confirmed the arrests. He informed that those arrested have been produced before court in connection with the specific case, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
