Student arrested over alleged AI-generated image of Zaima Rahman

Police have arrested a college student in Panchagarh for allegedly creating and sharing an offensive AI-generated image of Zaima Rahman on social media, authorities said on Wednesday (April 23).

The detainee, identified as Shakil Ahmed, 24, was picked up from the Bhaolaganj Bazar area in Debiganj upazila. He is a third-year student at Tejgaon College in Dhaka.

According to police and local sources, Shakil posted the manipulated image from his personal Facebook account on Tuesday, accompanied by derogatory remarks targeting Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The post quickly went viral, sparking anger among local BNP leaders and activists.

Fearing unrest, local authorities were alerted, prompting police to launch a drive and detain the suspect.

Debiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Selim Malik confirmed the arrest, saying the authenticity of the post has been verified.

Preparations are underway to file a case against Shakil under the Information and Communication Technology Act, and he will be produced before a court soon.
