Student dies while trying to resolve football dispute in Bogura
A school student died after being attacked by an opponent while trying to resolve a dispute that arose over a football match in Sherpur upazila of Bogura. The incident took place around 6:30pm on Monday, August 3, at the Sherua Adarsha High School ground in Shahbandegi union of the upazila.
The deceased Jamil Sheikh, 16, was the son of Rafiqul Islam from the Sherua Dahpara area of Shahbandegi union. He was a Class 10 student of the Rural Development Academy (RDA) Laboratory School.
Locals and eyewitnesses said a dispute and argument broke out between players of two sides during a football match at the Sherua Adarsha High School ground on Monday evening. As the situation escalated, Jamil Sheikh tried to mediate and resolve the dispute. At that time, a young man named Shakil, 22, from the opposing side attacked him, kicking, punching and beating him. Jamil was seriously injured and collapsed on the field. Locals rescued him and took him to Sherpur Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Locals said the accused Shakil is the son of Shafiqul Islam from the Sherua Dahpara area of the same union. He works as a manager at a local warehouse. He has been on the run since the incident.
Sherpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge SM Moinuddin said police went to the scene and the hospital after receiving the news. The body would be handed over to the family after completing the autopsy and necessary legal procedures.
He further said raids were underway to arrest the accused. Legal action would be taken against those involved after the investigation.
