Students at the University of Dhaka staged a protest march on Friday (July 11) condemning the brutal killing of businessman Sohag, who was beaten to death with stones in the Mitford area of Old Dhaka.

The demonstration began in the evening from the dormitory areas of the campus, where students chanted slogans such as “Action to Action, Direct Action.” Protesters described the incident as the height of barbarity, where Youth Wing members of a political party allegedly murdered Sohag for refusing to pay extortion money and danced over his lifeless body afterward.

DU student A.B. Zubayer stated, “Since August 5, we have been trying to rebuild the country, but a gang of extortionists stands in the way. The video footage clearly shows a man being stoned to death simply for refusing to pay extortion. Are we returning to the Stone Age?”

Bin Yamin Molla, president of the Student Rights Council, said, “We protested during the Awami League regime, and now we are protesting under BNP rule. Those who were once victims have now turned into oppressors. If this murder goes unpunished, the public will not remain silent.”

At the same time, another protest was held on campus by the Bangladesh Student Federation, also condemning Sohag’s murder. The student groups demanded swift justice and an end to political violence, vowing to continue their movement until their demands are met.
