Students of Government Titumir College in the capital staged a protest on Monday night, demanding a reduction in hall fees, re-fixing fees at a reasonable level, and the resignation of the college principal .

The students gathered in front of the hall gate on Monday (July 20) night and held a protest march and rally. They chanted slogans calling for immediate action to reduce hall fees. Students alleged that while affiliated colleges under Dhaka Central University charge Tk 6,000 as hall fees, Titumir College has set the fee at Tk 8,000, placing financial strain on many students.

The protesters said that after several days of agitation, the college administration had assured them of a fee reduction. However, the latest notification reduced the hall fee by only Tk 200 to Tk 7,800, which they find unacceptable.

A student participating in the protest said they had submitted a memorandum to the administration demanding a reduction in hall fees. However, the administration has only invited two student leaders for discussions. He said that the decision of thousands of students cannot be made by two student leaders; the students themselves will decide on the matter.

He further alleged that the administration initially promised to bring down the hall fee to Tk 7,000 but later reduced it by only Tk 200 to Tk 7,800. He claimed this is tantamount to deception and a farce with the students.

The students have demanded that hall fees be re-fixed at Tk 6,000, all types of fees be set at reasonable levels, and the college principal resign. They also announced that they would intensify their movement until their demands are met.
