Students at Kotkhali Fazil Madrasa in Galachipa upazila, Patuakhali, were forced to write their half-yearly exams with umbrellas over their heads as rainwater leaked through the classroom roof.

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 12, during exams in two classrooms. A video showing water dripping from various parts of the ceiling while students wrote with one hand and held umbrellas with the other went viral on social media.

Madrasa teacher Md Kawsar Ahmed said the institution has over 500 students but only six classrooms, despite needing at least 20 to conduct classes from Ebtedayi first grade to degree level.

Madrasa Principal Maolana Md Nazir Ahmed said the building, established in 1927, has become dilapidated due to lack of renovation. Rainwater leaks through various parts of the roof during the monsoon, disrupting teaching and exams.

He said construction of a new building is underway but has been delayed and will take another year to complete. As a result, they are forced to continue academic activities in the old, hazardous building.
