Subrata Bain put on 7-day remand over Jubo Dal leader's murder

A Dhaka court has granted a seven-day remand for Subrata Bain, alias Fateh Ali, in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal leader Md. Arif Sikder.

Subrata was produced before the court on Wednesday in the case filed at Hatirjheel Police Station. Investigating officer Md. Mazharul Islam, inspector of police, sought a 10-day remand for interrogation. Following arguments from both prosecution and defense, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Abdul Wahab approved a 7-day remand.

Earlier, on June 23, the court ordered Subrata to be shown arrested in this case. He was presented virtually from jail during the hearing.

According to the case statement, on the night of April 19, Arif Sikder was shot in front of The Jheel Café in Dhaka’s Nayatola Morol Goli area. He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died two days later. Arif was the former assistant sports secretary of Ward-36 Jubo Dal under Dhaka North City unit.

Following the murder, Arif’s sister Rima Akter filed a case accusing Subrata Bain’s associate Mahfuzur Rahman Bipu and nine others. The Detective Branch (DB) of police’s Tejgaon Division is currently investigating the case.

The other accused are: Md. Yasin (19), Md. Asif Hossain (21), Md. Anik (19), Md. Miraj (19), Md. Ashiq (19), Md. Ifti (24), Zafar Imam Torofdar Montu (40), Ratan Sheikh (45), and Alif (19).

On May 27, Subrata Bain and three others, including associate Molla Masud, were arrested by the army with illegal firearms. The following day, he was placed on an eight-day remand in a separate arms case under the Arms Act.
