Sudden tornado hits Cox's Bazar beach, tourists panic
A sudden tornado struck Sugandha Point at Cox's Bazar beach on Friday afternoon, July 17, causing panic among tourists. The whirlwind lasted for three to five minutes. No casualties were reported, but over 50 chairs and umbrellas were damaged.
The tornado approached from the sea around 3:45 pm and hit Sugandha Point, moving towards the shoreline. Tourists rushed to find safe shelter as the strong winds lifted chairs, umbrellas and other light items.
Local businessman Mahbubur Rahman said 52 wooden chairs and 61 umbrellas were damaged, causing financial losses to beachside businesses.
Shop owners began clearing the damaged items and restoring the beach environment.
Cox's Bazar Weather Office Assistant Meteorologist Md Abdul Hannan said the whirlwind was a weak tornado. He advised that in such situations, the safest action is to quickly move to a secure location.
