Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk-e-Azam has said that members of cooperative societies must work for the greater good rather than personal gain. He emphasised that cooperatives play a vital role in the country’s economic and social progress. If cooperative members work together in a united effort, sustainable development can be achieved.

He made these remarks at a discussion marking the 54th National Cooperative Day, held at the Chattogram Shishu Academy on Saturday, November 1.

Faruk-e-Azam further said that no cooperative organisation can become strong without mutual trust and confidence among its members. He stressed the importance of involving youth and women to strengthen the local economy.

Referring to the movement for change that took place in July, the adviser said that the aspirations of that movement could be fulfilled through the cooperative movement. He also highlighted the need to engage more women in cooperatives, noting that economically self-reliant women would help raise a responsible and capable next generation.

He added that, with the help of online platforms, anyone can now join a cooperative and participate in production, marketing, and socio-economic development activities.

The discussion was presided over by Mohammad Dulal Miah, Joint Registrar of the National Cooperative Office in Chattogram. Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md Ziauddin, DIG of Chattogram Range Ahsan Habib Palash, Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam, and District Cooperative Officer Mosleh Uddin also spoke at the event.

Earlier in the day, a colourful rally was held to mark the occasion. This year’s National Cooperative Day was observed under the theme “Cooperatives build the nation through equality and equity.”
