Swechasebak League leader dies in hospital after falling ill in jail

Khairul Amin Ruhul Sarker (50), a leader of the banned Swechasebak League, has died after falling ill while in Kishoreganj District Jail and being taken to hospital.

He died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Dhaka around 2am on Saturday night, September 26.

Khairul Amin Ruhul Sarker was a former joint convener of the Katiadi upazila Swechasebak League (currently banned). He was the son of the late Usman Gani of Dashpakhi village in Lohajuri union of Katiadi upazila. He was a former assistant legal affairs secretary of the Central Document Writers' Association and a former organising secretary of the Katiadi Document Writers' Association.

Khairul Amin's elder brother, Nurul Amin, confirmed his death.

Family sources said he had been experiencing occasional chest pain for some time. He had been unwell for several days while in jail. When his physical condition deteriorated on Friday, he was taken to Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital in Kishoreganj. Later, he was sent to Dhaka from there and died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases.

Kishoreganj District Jailer Nashir Ahmed said when Khairul Amin developed breathing problems, he was first sent to Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital. When his condition deteriorated there, he was sent to Dhaka under police management. He died while undergoing treatment in the early hours of the morning.

It was learned that Khairul Amin Ruhul Sarker was arrested by Katiadi Model Police Station police around noon on September 8. He was later sent to court in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
