Sylhet clash leaves 15 injured including police
A clash broke out between people from five villages in Sylhet over a verbal altercation between two teenagers in the middle of the night.
At least 15 people from both sides, including police personnel, were injured in the incident.
The clash took place in the city's Temukhi area around 12:30 am on Wednesday (February 4). Traffic on the Sylhet-Sunamganj regional road was temporarily halted during the clash.
The army and police reached the spot after 1am after receiving information and brought the situation under control. Later, the army and police are on alert in the area to avoid any further untoward incidents.
According to police and local sources, an argument broke out between two teenagers from Kumargaon and Sahebergaon villages adjacent to the city's Temukhi area after Wednesday evening. The clash started in the middle of the night as a result of that incident. At one stage, people from Nazirergaon on behalf of Kumargaon village and from Charargaon and Kalirgaon on behalf of Sahebergaon village got involved in the clash.
On Thursday (February 5) afternoon, Shamsul Habib, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jalalabad Police Station of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), said that after receiving the news of the clash, the police and the army went to the spot and controlled the situation. Several people from both sides, including the police, were injured during this time.
However, he could not immediately reveal the names of the injured.
He also said that the army and police are currently deployed in the area.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam said that initially some claimed that the incident was a political clash. However, no such information was found during the investigation. The clash between the villagers was mainly centered around a quarrel.
