Sylhet Education Board sees sharp fall in SSC pass rate, but GPA-5 rise

Sylhet Education Board has witnessed a sharp decline in the results of this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations. The board’s pass rate has fallen by 10.24 percentage points in one year.

According to the results published on Monday (10 August) morning, the SSC pass rate under the Sylhet Education Board was 58.33 per cent this year, compared to 68.57 per cent in 2025.

Professor Bilkis Yasmin, controller of examinations at the Sylhet Education Board, officially announced the results. Board Secretary Professor Mamun Ahmed and other senior officials were present at the time.

Over the past five years, the board has witnessed a continuous decline in its pass rate. In 2022, the pass rate was 78.82 per cent, followed by 76.06 per cent in 2023 and 73.35 per cent in 2024.

This year, 89,079 students from 973 educational institutions under the Sylhet Board appeared for the examination, of whom 51,957 passed.

A total of nine institutions achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in Sylhet this year. However, no institution recorded a 100 per cent failure rate.

Despite the decline in the pass rate, the number of students achieving GPA-5 increased by 222 this year. A total of 3,836 students secured GPA-5, compared to 3,614 last year.

As in previous years, girls in Sylhet outperformed boys both in terms of the pass rate and the number of GPA-5 achievers. A total of 2,091 girls secured GPA-5, compared to 1,745 boys.

The pass rate among boys was 56.12 per cent, while the rate among girls was 59.78 per cent.

Of the 35,438 boys who appeared for the examination, 19,889 passed. Meanwhile, 32,068 of the 53,641 girls who took the examination passed.

An analysis of the Sylhet Board’s results shows that the science group recorded the highest pass rate at 80.32 per cent. The pass rate was 48.16 per cent in the humanities group and 64.03 per cent in the business studies group.

In terms of GPA-5, 3,608 students from the science group, 120 from the humanities group and 108 from the business studies group achieved the highest grade.

A district-wise analysis of the results under the Sylhet Board shows that, as usual, candidates from Sylhet district performed the best, recording a pass rate of 62.88 per cent.

Among the other districts, the pass rate was 55.92 per cent in Moulvibazar, 55.40 per cent in Habiganj and 54.67 per cent in Sunamganj.

Similarly, Sylhet district recorded the highest number of GPA-5 achievers, with 2,023 students securing the highest grade. Among the other three districts, 725 students in Moulvibazar, 675 in Habiganj and 413 in Sunamganj achieved GPA-5.
