Continuous heavy rainfall and upstream hill runoff have heightened flood risks across the country's northeast part, with authorities warning that Sylhet and Sunamganj could face flooding within the next 24 to 72 hours.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board said rising water levels in several rivers have pushed the region closer to a flood situation, as a low-pressure system and active monsoon continue to trigger widespread rainfall.

According to the FFWC, water levels in the Khowai, Manu and Kushiyara rivers have already crossed danger levels. The Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger mark at Markuli in Sunamganj and Fenchuganj in Sylhet.

The agency warned that water levels in the Surma, Kushiyara and Manu rivers are likely to rise further over the next 24 hours, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas along the Surma and Kushiyara basins in Sylhet and Sunamganj.

It also cautioned that the Sarigowain, Someshwari, Jadukata and Bhugai-Kangsha rivers may exceed danger levels at several points if heavy rainfall continues.

According to the latest assessment, seven districts are already affected by flooding, while eight more could come under flood threat within the next 24 hours. Flash floods have already hit Habiganj and Moulvibazar, with Sylhet and Sunamganj identified as the most vulnerable districts.

Officials also noted that preliminary analyses indicate the current floods have affected a larger area and more people than the devastating August 2024 floods in the Feni-Cumilla region.
