Taka among South Asia's most stable currencies: Bangladesh Bank
The Bangladeshi taka has remained one of the most stable currencies in South Asia and neighbouring countries over the past year. According to Bangladesh Bank data, the taka depreciated by only 0.59 percent against the US dollar from March 2025 to March 2026 .
The central bank's quarterly report said that during the same period, the Indian rupee experienced the sharpest depreciation in the region, losing 8.94 percent of its value. The Sri Lankan rupee depreciated by 5.11 percent, the Philippine peso by 3.70 percent and the Indonesian rupiah by 2.67 percent .
In contrast, the Chinese yuan appreciated by 5.14 percent, making it the strongest-performing currency. The Pakistani rupee also appreciated by 0.39 percent. Only Cambodia's currency performed slightly better than Bangladesh's, with a depreciation of 0.44 percent .
Bangladesh Bank officials said the adoption of a market-based exchange rate regime as per IMF conditions and strengthened foreign exchange management have helped keep the taka relatively stable. Additionally, stronger remittance and export earnings have bolstered foreign exchange reserves .
According to central bank data, the country's foreign exchange reserves stood at $31.60 billion as of July 30, up from $24.86 billion a year earlier . However, the dollar demand has increased recently due to rising import costs. On August 4, the interbank exchange rate was Tk 123.81 per dollar, compared to Tk 123.69 a few days earlier .
