Special assistant to the chief adviser on posts, telecommunications and ICT, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, has said mobile phone import duties have been reduced to a reasonable level but the National Equipment Identity Register system will not be withdrawn.

Speaking at a press briefing after visiting the BTRC building on Sunday, November 4, he also said those involved in vandalising the commission’s premises would be brought to justice.

He said the government had responded to long-standing demands by lowering import duties and allowing previously undeclared handsets to be legalised. Despite this, he accused protesting traders of creating disorder by blocking roads and shutting shops while seeking what he termed a licence to commit offences.

BTRC chairman Md Emdad Ul Bari briefed him on the extent of damage caused during the attack on the building.

Meanwhile, mobile phone traders again gathered at Karwan Bazar, clashing with police when they were asked to leave the road. Law enforcement used sound grenades and tear gas to regain control. Police said clashes resumed after 1:35pm, with stone-throwing from both sides, prompting the deployment of army and RAB members.

The NEIR system officially came into effect on January 1, linking all mobile phone IMEI numbers to a national database. Traders have opposed the system since its announcement.
