Tarique Rahman calls emergency meeting of standing committee
Tarique Rahman, BNP Acting Chairman, has called an emergency meeting of the party’s standing committee.
The meeting will be held at the BNP chairperson’s political office in Gulshan on Friday (January 9) at 9:30 pm, party standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain confirmed.
The meeting will be chaired by Tarique Rahman. A senior party leader said, "The meeting was not pre-scheduled and has no specific agenda. However, the meeting is considered highly important, as a decision may be taken to elect Tarique Rahman as BNP chairman."
It is noteworthy that BNP chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on December 30. Although her death created a nationwide atmosphere of mourning, the party has gradually resumed political activities. The need has arisen to complete BNP’s leadership structure with the national parliamentary election ahead.
Party sources said members of the national standing committee have advised Tarique Rahman to formally assume responsibility as party chairman. Earlier, o BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told journalists in Sylhet on January 4 that," Tarique Rahman would be elected as party chairman within a day or two."
It may be recalled that in 2018, after Begum Khaleda Zia was imprisoned, Tarique Rahman was appointed as BNP’s acting chairman.
