Tarique Rahman calls to work together to restore democracy
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called for collective efforts to restore democracy in Bangladesh. He made the call in a Facebook post on Sunday (September 14) evening.
In his message on the occasion of International Day of Democracy, he said that the foundation of repairing the state would be a free, fair, and participatory election. He emphasised the need to ensure the independence of the judiciary and the media, along with the institutional application of all fundamental principles of democracy. He further remarked that democracy had been obstructed over the past one and a half decades due to the emergence of Awami fascism.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that if the practice of democracy continued, no authoritarian power could rise. He observed that although victory was achieved through the historic blood-stained movement in July–August, full democracy had not yet been established. He added that to make democracy permanent, the continuity of free and fair elections must be ensured
