BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday (August 9) declared Tarique Rahman as the "future Prime Minister of Bangladesh."

Speaking as a special guest at the National Council of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) at Wills Little Flower School and College auditorium in the capital, Fakhrul emphasized the need for a democratic system that guarantees not only voting rights but also access to health, life, and basic freedoms.

“Our leader, future leader, and future Prime Minister is connected with us today,” Fakhrul said, referring to Tarique Rahman, who joined the event virtually. He urged Tarique Rahman to prioritize healthcare, citing its critical importance for the nation’s 180 million citizens.

Criticizing the current government’s drug policy, Fakhrul warned of a looming crisis in the pharmaceutical industry. “Drug manufacturers have informed me that recent policies from the Health Ministry could lead to factory closures. These policies are threatening an industry that was once globally competitive,” he said.

Fakhrul also highlighted the government’s alleged actions against doctors who treated injured protesters during recent political movements. “Many doctors were harassed for providing treatment. I thank those who stood by the injured—the nation will remember their courage,” he added.

Demanding proper medical treatment for those injured in the July protests, Fakhrul called it a “major demand” of the BNP for the people of the country.

Addressing DAB members, he encouraged them to maintain organizational independence and play a greater role in shaping national health policy. “You are not just serving the people, you are helping build the future of the country,” he said.

Fakhrul also recounted his own experience with medical negligence while in prison, accusing the authorities of denying him timely treatment and creating a “culture of political vengeance” that undermines human dignity.

He reiterated that the 31-point reform agenda proposed by Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman gives significant importance to the health sector and should be seen as a national roadmap for change.
