Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will formally assume office at the Bangladesh Secretariat today (February 18), and chair his first cabinet meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

The day’s programme will commence at 10:00am with a visit to the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, where he will lay a wreath to pay homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War in 1971.

Following the tribute, he will return to Dhaka to take office at the Prime Minister’s Office under the Cabinet Division at the Bangladesh Secretariat around 12:30pm. He will also participate in an introductory meeting with officials of the Cabinet Division to exchange views.

On his first working day, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to hold a special meeting with members of the Cabinet, as well as a separate discussion session with secretaries to outline the government’s immediate priorities and administrative directives.

After lunch at the secretariat, he will chair a special cabinet meeting at 3:00pm, during which key policy matters and the new government’s action plan are expected to be discussed.

Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh at a colourful ceremony held in the open air at the South Plaza of the national parliament complex on Tuesday.

Following the formalities, he visited the graves of his father, BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, and former prime minister Late Begum Khaleda Zia at Sher-e-Banglanagar in Dhaka.

He offered prayers there, seeking eternal peace for the departed, on the occasion of assuming office as prime minister for the first time.
