BNP chairman Tarique Rahman is set to visit his home district Bogura after 18 years. He will address a public rally as the chief guest on Thursday, January 29, organised by the Bogura district unit of the BNP.
Bogura district BNP president Rezaul Karim Badsha said that after completing a rally in Naogaon on January 29, Tarique Rahman will enter Bogura Sadar by road via Adamdighi and Kahalu upazilas. In the afternoon, he will speak at a public rally at Altafunnesa playground in Bogura town. After the rally, he will stay overnight in Bogura.
The following day, Tarique Rahman will carry out mass contact programmes in his constituency Bogura-6, Sadar. He is also scheduled to conduct mass contact activities in Bogura-7, Shajahanpur–Gabtali. Later, he will spend some time at his ancestral home in Bagbari area of Gabtali upazila. He will then return to Bogura town via Majhira area of Shajahanpur upazila and stay there overnight again.
Rezaul Karim Badsha said the programme outline has been received so far, though it is not final and may change.
It may be mentioned that Tarique Rahman was scheduled to visit Bogura on January 11, but the visit was later cancelled at the request of the Election Commission.
According to party sources, Tarique Rahman built a four-storey house named Green Estate in 2000 on land donated by former MP Helaluzzaman Talukder Lalu at Riaz Kazi Lane in Sutrapur area of Bogura town. He stayed at the house intermittently between 2001 and 2007.
Tarique Rahman was arrested during the One-Eleven caretaker government in 2007 and was subjected to severe torture. On September 11, 2008, he was sent to London for advanced medical treatment, where he spent years in exile before returning to the country. He is now set to visit Bogura after nearly 18 years.
Bogura district BNP joint general secretary Enamul Haque Shaheen said the visit has created widespread excitement not only among party leaders and activists but also among the general public. He said people of Bogura are eager to see Tarique Rahman in person after a long time, creating strong public anticipation and emotion.
He added that amid the current political situation, people across the country see new hope in Tarique Rahman’s leadership and that voters in BNP stronghold Bogura will elect him by a huge margin in the national parliamentary election.
