After the death of BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman issued an emotional message remembering his mother.

In a status posted on his verified Facebook profile on Tuesday, he wrote—

'My mother, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, has left us today in response to the call of Almighty Allah. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un.

For many, she was a national leader, an uncompromising leader; for many, the mother of democracy, the mother of Bangladesh. Today, the country is deeply saddened by the loss of a guide who played an invaluable role in the country's democratic journey.

To me, Khaleda Zia is a compassionate mother who dedicated her entire life to the country and its people. She fought against tyranny, fascism and hegemony all her life; She led the struggle for independence, sovereignty and democracy.

Despite her sacrifice and struggle, she was a true guardian of the family; a beacon of light whose immense love gave us strength and inspiration even in our most difficult times. She was repeatedly arrested, deprived of medical treatment, and subjected to the highest oppression. Yet, despite pain, loneliness and uncertainty, she instilled indomitable courage, compassion and patriotism in every member of her family.

She lost her husband and her children for the country. Therefore, this country, the people of this country were her family, her being, her existence. She left behind an unforgettable history of public service, sacrifice and struggle, which will be forever remembered in the democratic journey of Bangladesh.

All of you will pray for my mother. My family and I are eternally grateful for the passion, love and global respect of the countrymen for her.’

The death of Begum Khaleda Zia has cast a shadow of grief across the country. Various political parties, social organizations, and prominent individuals are expressing deep condolences.
