Tarique Rahman's oath taking in the international media
Tarique Rahman-led BNP won a landslide victory in the 13th parliamentary elections held in Bangladesh on February 12. He and his cabinet members took the oath today (February 17). The swearing-in ceremony was also widely reported in the international media.
Reuters headlined, "Tarique Rahman sworn in as Bangladesh PM after landslide election victory." Their report described the event as a symbol of a decisive political shift for South Asia.
The Associated Press (AP) headlined, "Bangladesh's new PM sworn in after his party's landslide election victory." The AP also wrote that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who took office for a five-year term, is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and former President Ziaur Rahman and is the first male Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 35 years. His mother, or political rival Sheikh Hasina, had been the Prime Minister since the restoration of democracy in 1991.
Deutsche Welle headlined, “Bangladesh’s new PM sworn in after landslide victory.” They described the BNP’s victory as an “easy victory.”
Al Jazeera headlined, “Tarique Rahman sworn in as Bangladesh’s new PM.” Pakistani media outlet Dawn wrote, “Bangladesh’s new PM, political heir Tarique Rahman,” and identified the new PM as a long-hidden heir in his political family.
India’s The Hindu and NDTV headlined, “Bangladesh’s new PM sworn in,” and described it as “the beginning of a new era in Bangladeshi politics.”
