Tawhid Afridi placed on 5-day remand
A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for popular content creator Tawhid Afridi in connection with the murder of Asadul Haque Babu during last year’s July movement in the capital’s Jatrabari area.
Afridi was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court at 2:25 PM on Monday and was kept in the court's lockup. Following a hearing in the afternoon, Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque approved the remand petition.
Earlier, CID Inspector Khan Md. Erfan, the investigating officer of the case, had sought a seven-day remand for Afridi.
Afridi was arrested on Sunday night (August 24) from Barishal by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
In connection with the same case, Afridi’s father, Nasir Uddin Sathi — chairman of private television channel MyTV — was arrested on August 17 from Gulshan, Dhaka. The following day, a three-day remand was granted against him. Upon completion of the remand, he was sent to jail on August 23.
According to the case documents, on August 5 last year, during the July movement, protester Md. Asadul Haque Babu was fatally shot while participating in a demonstration on a paved road under Jatrabari Police Station.
Following the incident, Babu’s father, Zainal Abedin, filed a case naming 25 individuals as accused — including Sheikh Hasina.
In the First Information Report (FIR), Nasir Uddin is listed as accused number 22, while his son, Tawhid Afridi, is accused number 11.
