Today marks the 10th of Muharram—Holy Ashura—a day of deep mourning for the Muslim Ummah. On this day in 61 AH, Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was martyred on the plains of Karbala. In remembrance of this tragic event, members of the Shia community in Old Dhaka have brought out a Tazia procession.

On Sunday (July 6), the procession began around 10 a.m. from the north gate of the 400-year-old Hussaini Dalan Imambara in Dhaka.

The procession is following this route: Hussaini Dalan Road → Bakshibazar Lane → Alia Madrasa Road → Bakshibazar (Kalpar) Intersection → Umesh Dutta Road → Urdu Road Intersection → Harnath Ghosh Road → Lalbari Chourasta → Gor-e-Shahid Mazar Intersection → Etimkhana Intersection → Azimpur Chourasta → Eden College → Nilkhet Intersection → Mirpur Road → Dhaka College → Science Lab Intersection → Road No. 2 in Dhanmondi Residential Area → BGB Gate No. 4 → Sat Masjid Road (Jigatola Bus Stand), and is scheduled to conclude around 2:30 p.m. at Dhanmondi Lake, a symbolic representation of Karbala.

According to M.M. Firoz Hossain, superintendent of Hussaini Dalan Imambara, the Tazia procession features black banners, red and green "Bahishti" flags, symbolic representations of the Panja Alam, the Zuljanah (sacred horse), the Khuni horse, and a traditional Jari Tazia.

Strict security measures have been implemented surrounding the procession. Members of the law enforcement agencies have been deployed at the front, middle, and rear of the procession. Alongside the police, personnel from the army, RAB, SWAT, and plainclothes intelligence agencies are also present.

Traffic police and general police have been observed managing and controlling traffic along the procession route to ensure public safety and smooth movement.
