In a heartbreaking act of courage and sacrifice, teacher Meherin Chowdhury, 46, lost her life while saving students during the plane crash at Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka.

Despite knowing the grave danger, Meherin rushed to rescue her students when a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into the school building on Monday afternoon. She managed to evacuate the students to safety, but could not save herself. Severely burned, she was admitted to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where she succumbed to her injuries later that night.

Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, Resident Surgeon at the Burn Institute, confirmed her death.

Eyewitnesses said Meherin Chowdhury acted swiftly during the crash, pulling students out of classrooms and guiding them to safety. In doing so, a large part of her body was burned by the fire, and she was unable to escape in time.

A parent of a student at Milestone School said the army informed them that the teacher’s quick actions saved the lives of at least 15 to 20 students.

On Monday afternoon, a Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into the Milestone School and College campus in Diabari, Uttara. The horrific incident left at least 20 people dead, including the pilot, and over 171 injured—many of whom are currently being treated at various hospitals in the capital.
