Teacher injured as ceiling plaster collapses during class

A teacher was injured after a chunk of ceiling plaster collapsed and struck his head during a class at a school in Wazirpur, Barishal, though students in the classroom narrowly escaped unhurt. The incident took place on Monday at the Government W. B. Union Institution Secondary School in the upazila headquarters.

According to school sources, Assistant Teacher Zahidul Islam was conducting a class for seventh-grade students when ceiling plaster suddenly detached with a loud crash and fell onto his head, leaving him injured. He received medical treatment shortly after the incident.

Eyewitness and seventh-grade student Sathi Rahela said that the sudden collapse of the ceiling plaster onto the teacher's head during the lesson terrified everyone inside the classroom. Another student, Sima, noted that all the students were present in the room when the plaster fell, and the teacher's injury sparked widespread panic among them.

Headmaster Shahidul Islam stated that the building was constructed in 1960. He added that a teacher was injured when plaster collapsed from the roof of the long-standing, aging building during class, and the matter will be reported to higher authorities.

Guardians expressed concern that conducting academic activities in old and risky buildings poses a dangerous threat to both students and teachers. They demanded an immediate inspection of the building followed by necessary renovations or the construction of a new facility.

Wazirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ali Suja stated that the incident will be investigated and necessary steps will be taken.
