Technical team formed on water-sharing treaty, Dhaka to inform Delhi soon: PM's Adviser

The government has formed a technical team to discuss a water-sharing treaty, and the team will soon inform India of the matter, said Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, the Prime Minister's Adviser on Finance and Planning. He also said emphasis is being placed on ensuring Bangladesh's fair share of upstream water, as well as on the long-term and equitable management of the country's water resources.

Titumir said these things while exchanging views with journalists at his residence in Kalimahor village in Rajbari late on Friday night.

Highlighting the need for proper use of water resources, he said if adequate water flow can be ensured in the rivers, it will be possible to keep agriculture and fisheries production normal. For this reason, proper management of water resources is one of the current government's election commitments.

In continuation of this, the finance and planning adviser mentioned the approval of the Padma Barrage project at ECNEC. He said through this project, arrangements will not only be made for water conservation, but there will also be the opportunity for power generation.

Titumir said there are 54 rivers with international water flow relations with Bangladesh. In managing the water of these rivers, Bangladesh's national interest will be given the highest priority. The government's position is to ensure Bangladesh's interest above all else.

He also said initiatives will be taken to ensure Bangladesh's water flow as a downstream country in light of international law and recognised principles. According to him, the government will work to establish Bangladesh's rights over water resources on the basis of equity.
