A teenage boy was killed after allegedly being struck on the head with a dumbbell by his younger brother following a dispute at their residence in capital’s Kalabagan area.

The incident took place late Sunday night (May 31), police said.

The deceased, Sadman Wasif Supantha, 17, was an SSC examinee at a school in the capital, while the accused, Rafit Arian Shuddho, 16, is a Class 10 student at the same institution.

According to police, the two brothers were staying together at a residence on Free School Street in the Kathalbagan area. Their father, Sirajul Salehin, lives in Canada, while their mother resides separately following a divorce.

Shamsul Haque Sumon, sub-inspector (SI) of Kalabagan Police Station, said, "An argument broke out between the siblings over a trivial matter. At one stage, the younger brother allegedly became enraged and struck Supanth on the head with a dumbbell kept in the room, leaving him critically injured."

Family members rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where the on-duty physician declared him dead around 11:30pm.

Police recovered the body from the hospital's emergency department after being informed of the incident and later sent it to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.

Law enforcement authorities said further legal proceedings are underway and the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.
