A seventh-grade student in Chattogram city was found dead after being allegedly beaten and thrown into Karnaphuli river by four of his friends.

Police recovered the body from Karnaphuli river in the Hamidchar area around 7.00am on Wednesday (April 30).

The deceased has been identified as Rahat Islam, 12, was a student of Sanowara Boys School and the son of Md Liakat Ali of Purba Farid Para in Ward No 4, Chandgaon. He used to play for the Chattogram Brothers Union junior cricket team.

According to police, Rahat went missing on April 29 during the school holiday while spending time with friends. It is suspected that an old dispute led to the fatal attack, during which the four friends beat him and threw him into the river. Locals spotted the body floating in the water early Wednesday and alerted the authorities.

Officers from Chandgaon Police Station later recovered the body. While no arrests have been made yet, the four friends involved have been taken into custody for questioning.

Aftab Uddin, officer-in-charge of Chandgaon Police Station, said, "There are allegations that four friends were involved in the killing of the boy. They have been taken into police custody. Further details will be disclosed after the investigation."
