Teenager's hand severed for refusing marriage proposal in Meherpur

A young man allegedly broke into a teenager's house late at night in Meherpur city and severed her right hand with a sharp weapon. The attacker also hacked the teenager's parents during the assault.

The incident took place around 2am on Tuesday, August 25, at a house in the city, said Meherpur Sadar Police Station OC Humayun Kabir.

The injured teenager is 17 years old. She is the daughter of local businessman Selim Hossain and an SSC examinee. The accused, Sayan (24), is the son of hotelier Abu Taleb of Mallikpara area in the city.

The teenager's father, Selim Hossain, alleged that Sayan used to harass his daughter whenever she went out. When his daughter informed him, he complained to Sayan's father. Even after that, Sayan continued to threaten his daughter to accept his marriage proposal.

Selim Hossain said Sayan climbed over the wall and entered his daughter's room around 2am. He then severed his daughter's right hand with a sharp weapon. When family members rushed to the spot hearing her screams, he attacked them with a sharp dao and fled.

The teenager's mother, Rebaka Khatun, said she went to the room hearing her daughter's screams and saw her right hand severed and lying on the floor. Her daughter was writhing in pain on the floor in a bloodied condition.

Neighbour Barkat Ullah Taru said they heard screams late at night and went to the spot, where they saw a young man fleeing the house. Later, they found the teenager lying on the floor inside the room, with a bloodied sharp dao beside her severed hand. They also found her parents in a bloodied condition.

Locals rescued the three injured and first took them to Meherpur General Hospital. After receiving emergency treatment, they were later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment due to excessive blood loss and deteriorating physical condition.

Meherpur Sadar Police Station OC Humayun Kabir said police visited the spot after receiving information. Statements were recorded from the injured at the hospital. The dao used in the attack has been recovered. The accused, Sayan, was arrested from the Mallikpara mango orchard on Friday morning.
