Teesta water level rises due to heavy rain, 44 sluice gates opened

The water level of the Teesta River has risen due to heavy rainfall and hill runoff from India, flowing just 5 centimetres below the danger level at the Dalia point in Nilphamari. The Water Development Board (WDB) has opened 44 sluice gates of the Teesta Barrage to manage the water pressure.

Nurul Islam, a water level measurer of the WDB's Dalia Division, confirmed the matter on Monday morning. He said, "At 9am on Monday, the water level at the Dalia point of the Teesta Barrage in Nilphamari's Dimla upazila was recorded at 52.10 metres. It is flowing 5 centimetres below the danger level, which is 52.15 metres at this point. The water level was the same at 6am."

Amitav Chowdhury, Executive Engineer of the Dalia Division, said the Teesta's water level rose to 5 centimetres below the danger level at 9am. The water level may rise further. To control the situation, 44 sluice gates of the Teesta Barrage have been opened.
