Tense situation prevails at CU as section 144 extended
The atmosphere remains tense at Chittagong University following violent clashes between students and local villagers. In an effort to maintain order, the local administration has extended Section 144 for another day. Consequently, all classes and examinations have been suspended today (Tuesday, September 2). Joint security forces continue patrolling the campus to prevent any further incidents.
In response to the clashes, various student organizations have staged protests and held press conferences demanding immediate action. On Tuesday morning, the Democratic Student Alliance presented six key demands, including guaranteed medical treatment for the injured, increased public transport within the campus, swift prosecution of those involved in violent attacks, and assurance of student safety. The group also called for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and the Chief Proctor, holding them responsible for failing to protect students.
Later in the day, the Chittagong University chapter of the Nationalist Student League held protests demanding the resignation of the university administration. They accused the authorities of gross negligence in handling the incident and alleged that the administration is serving the agenda of a particular faction. The group also raised concerns over the lack of transparency regarding the actual number of injured.
In response to the escalating situation, the university administration has convened an emergency syndicate meeting at 3 PM today to discuss the current circumstances and determine the next steps. Meanwhile, legal proceedings related to the clashes are underway on behalf of the university.
