Tensions escalate in Basail over rival rallies, addl police deployed
A tense situation unfolded in Basail as two rival groups planned simultaneous gatherings at the Shaheed Minar, prompting the administration to impose Section 144 and deploy additional police personnel.
A few days ago, the Kaderia faction organized a freedom fighters' rally scheduled for Sunday at 3 PM at the Shaheed Minar. However, late Saturday night, another rally was announced for the same time and venue under the banner of a student assembly, escalating tensions between the two groups.
To prevent any untoward incidents, the local administration enforced Section 144, prohibiting any public gatherings in the area from 6 AM to 6 PM. On the ground, law enforcement officials maintained a strong presence around the Shaheed Minar and nearby areas, ensuring order in the town of Ghatail.
Wartime company commander Kazi Ashraf Humayun Bangal had submitted a written application to the Upazila Executive Officer on September 1, seeking permission for the freedom fighters’ rally. The event was expected to be graced by Bangabir Kader Siddique, president of the Krishok Shromik Janata League, as the chief guest.
Meanwhile, on September 6, student leader Roni Mia filed a separate application seeking permission to hold a student rally at the same venue and time. Both groups conducted public announcements through miking across the municipal area, leading to heightened tensions.
Roni Mia stated, “We are protesting the attempts by Awami fascists to rehabilitate themselves nationwide. Our rally will be peaceful, and despite any obstacles, we will hold it at the designated location.”
Responding to the situation, Kazi Ashraf Humayun Bangal expressed disappointment, saying, “We had applied for permission earlier. Holding a rally at the same place is an attempt to disrupt the freedom fighters’ event. They could have organized their gathering either before or after our program.”
Basail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jalal Uddin confirmed that Section 144 has been imposed and emphasized that no meetings or rallies are allowed in the area from 6 AM to 6 PM. Police remain vigilant to prevent any unrest.
