Tensions rise over recovery of child's body in Lalmonirhat, DC-SP's car vandalized
Police have recovered the body of a seven-year-old child in Aditmari, Lalmonirhat. The body was recovered from a cornfield in Folimari village of Bhelabari union of the upazila on Tuesday morning (June 16).
The child's name is Nandini. She is the daughter of Nalin Kanto of Folimari village. Police said that her family had not been able to find Nandini since Monday afternoon. At one point during the search on Tuesday morning, the family became suspicious when they saw soft soil in a cornfield near the house. The soil was removed and the child's body was found wrapped in a sack from there. Locals believe that the murder could have been committed due to a past enmity.
Police arrested Bidhan Chandra, son of neighbor Ranjit Chandra, from his house at noon on charges of involvement in the murder. When the incident came to light, the agitated crowd vandalized and set fire to Vidhan's house.
Later, Deputy Commissioner Rashedul Haque Pradhan, Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman and 15 BGB Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Mehedi Imam reached the spot and tried to calm the situation. At that time, several vehicles, including those of the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police, were vandalized. At one point, the police dispersed the agitated crowd by throwing sound grenades and took the detained Bidhan Chandra to the police station. When the situation heated up, additional police and BGB were deployed at the spot.
Deputy Commissioner Rashedul Haque said, "This incident is despicable. If the police officer, including the accused, is found to be negligent, he will also be brought under punishment."
