Life in Tetulia of Panchagarh has come to a near standstill as a moderate cold wave sweeps through the area, bringing biting cold, dense fog and icy winds.

Due to its proximity to the Himalayas, the region experiences sharper winter conditions despite minor temperature fluctuations.

The lowest temperature in Tetulia was recorded at 7.5 degrees Celsius at 6:00am on Wednesday (January 7).

At the time, humidity stood at 97 percent, while wind speed ranged between 6 and 8 kilometres per hour. A day earlier, on Tuesday morning, the temperature was recorded at 8.5 degrees Celsius.

Jitendra Nath Roy, officer-in-charge of the district’s first-class weather observatory, confirmed the data, saying temperatures have been steadily falling following several days of mist-like drizzle.

He added that this is the lowest temperature recorded in Tetulia so far this season.

A visit to different parts of the district on Wednesday morning showed that residents were staying indoors unless absolutely necessary. Many were seen warming themselves by lighting fires at street corners and tea stalls. Meanwhile, hospitals have reported a rise in cold-related illnesses, with children and the elderly being the most affected.

Akhtar Hossain, a mason from the Roushanabag area of Tetulia town, said the severe cold and chilly winds since night have made morning work extremely difficult. “Our hands feel frozen, but we still have to go out to work to support our families,” he said.

The weather office warned that temperatures may drop further in the coming days and the cold wave is likely to persist in Tetulia and surrounding areas.
