Thakurgaon-1 by-election within 90 days, schedule soon

Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarkar has informed that the by-election of Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary constituency will be held within 90 days. He said the Election Commission is making preparations for this and the election schedule may be announced very soon. He said these words while talking to journalists at his office in the Election Building on Sunday (September 6). At the same time he indicated that the action plan of the local government election will be finalized quickly and published within the current month.

The election commissioner said the Thakurgaon-1 seat became vacant on August 21. According to the law, the by-election has to be organized within the fixed 90 days after the seat becomes vacant. The commission is making necessary preparations for vote casting.

He further informed that preparation is also being taken to introduce IT-supported postal voting system in this by-election. He expressed the hope that it will be possible to announce the election schedule within a short time after completing all preparations.

The parliamentary seat became vacant after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir took charge as the new President. According to the notification of the National Parliament Secretariat, the Thakurgaon-1 seat was declared vacant from the day of taking charge of the President on August 21 as per Article 50(4) of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, the election commissioner did not agree to give any decision right now regarding the Chattogram-4 seat. He said the matter is under trial in the court. Subsequent steps will be taken after receiving the court’s decision and the copy of the verdict.
