That woman wanted to give service to Gazi Nazrul which is not unethical: Another Jamaat MP

Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker and the party's Central Organising Secretary, Muhaddis Abdul Khaleq, has made fresh remarks on the controversial marriage involving former Jamaat MP from Satkhira-4 Gazi Nazrul Islam, claiming that the woman at the centre of the controversy had expressed a desire to devote herself for him and that the act was "socially unacceptable, but not unethical."

He made the comments on Thursday evening while addressing a public reception at Gotaghata Mosque in Shibpur Union of Satkhira Sadar upazila.

According to Abdul Khaleq, discussions were held with both Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife regarding the incident. He said the woman involved had told them she did not want to marry anyone else and instead wished to devote herself to Gazi Nazrul Islam for the rest of her life. He added that the marriage was later arranged at the woman's family home with the consent of her parents.

The Jamaat leader said the party expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam because the marriage was not socially acceptable. He also stated that the process of cancelling the former MP's parliamentary membership is underway.

However, Abdul Khaleq stressed that such conduct was not expected from a senior leader like Gazi Nazrul Islam.

"An imam's mistake and an ordinary person's mistake cannot be viewed in the same way. Likewise, the mistakes of those in leadership carry greater responsibility," he said, adding that this was why the party had taken organisational action against him.

The event was chaired by Maulana Moniruzzaman, Ameer of Shibpur Union Jamaat-e-Islami, and attended by local party leaders and community members.
