This earthquake is a warning for us: Rizwana
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said Friday’s tremor, which struck at 10:38am, was the strongest Bangladesh has felt in the past five years, calling it a clear warning that must be taken seriously.
Speaking at an event in Dhaka, she said the quake should prompt urgent preparedness measures. “This is a repeated warning. We must take it seriously and prepare. There are no open spaces in Dhaka,” she noted.
She urged authorities to advance with a three-year plan to tackle fire hazards and earthquake risks.
According to Iqbal Ahmed of the Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, the epicenter was at Madhabdi in Narsingdi—13 km east of Agargaon. It measured 5.7 on the Richter scale.
