BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said today that those expressing concerns or doubts about the upcoming election are not genuine supporters of democracy or the country’s people.

He made these remarks on Saturday (August 16) afternoon at a Milad and Doa Mahfil organized by Jubo Dal at the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan, marking the 81st birthday of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Salahuddin Ahmed said, “Khaleda Zia is not just a name but a part of history. During the Liberation War, she endured imprisonment with her two children. Following the assassination of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman, she spearheaded a nine-year movement against autocracy, establishing herself as an uncompromising leader and restoring democracy in the country.”

He further said, “Khaleda Zia’s legacy includes the introduction of parliamentary democracy and the caretaker government system. In 1996, she incorporated the caretaker government provision into the constitution in response to public demand. Even today, she remains a beacon of democracy for the people.”

Referring to Khaleda Zia’s birthday, Salahuddin said that BNP, like people across the country, is celebrating with joy. “We wish her a long life as a guardian of democracy and freedom,” he remarked.

On the current political situation, he said, “Under Khaleda Zia’s leadership, we have always pursued dialogue to build consensus. A fair and peaceful election will only be possible through national consensus, and the entire nation is waiting for that.”

He said, “Those who are spreading unnecessary fears about the election are actually trying to delay or sabotage the voting process. But the people of this country are committed to defending democracy and their voting rights. Anyone attempting to block democracy will be resisted by the people.”

Looking ahead, the BNP leader added, “We believe that a united people will overcome all obstacles on the path to democratic transition. We urge all political parties and democratic forces to remain united before and after the upcoming election to ensure a fair and peaceful process.”
