BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that those who create division do not believe in consensus. Consensus cannot be achieved through pressure on the streets.

He made the remarks on Sunday afternoon at the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) auditorium in Dhaka while addressing the cover unveiling of the book “Guiding Recommendations for Building a Developed Nation of Tomorrow”.

Amir Khasru said that discussions in the Consensus Commission are being extended beyond what was initially agreed.

He said, “The representatives in parliament will decide what will be passed in the next parliament.”

Commenting that some quarters want everything passed right now, Amir Khasru said, “Even after Sheikh Hasina’s departure, undemocratic practices remain. Those trying to obstruct the election do not want democracy.”

He added, “Despite differences, BNP has taken the path of tolerance to restore democracy. Agreeing to a referendum on election day reflects BNP’s political liberalism.”
