Thousands rally in Cumilla demanding division status
Thousands of residents took to the streets Friday demanding that Cumilla be officially declared a division. Protesters warned they would continue their demonstration until the demand is met.
The rally began around 3 pm at Kandirpar Purbali Square, the heart of Cumilla city, attracting participants from all 17 upazilas of the district. Supporters were heard chanting slogans in favor of the Cumilla Division.
Organized under the banner of the Greater Cumilla Content Creators, the event was presided over by Tipu Chowdhury, president of the association. Leaders from political, social, and cultural organizations also addressed the gathering.
Speakers emphasized that Cumilla, historically the capital of the ancient Samatata region, has a rich heritage. They noted that every time Cumilla comes close to being declared a division, opposition arises from various quarters. They added that 42 regional offices from six districts of Greater Cumilla, including Noakhali, are already located in Comilla.
The demonstrators demanded that the new division be named “Cumilla Division” and stated that it could be formed even if some districts do not wish to join. The protest continued well into the evening, with participants vowing to stay on the streets until their demand is fulfilled.
