Three children drown while bathing in Jashore pond
Three children, including two sisters, had gone to bathe in a pond after leaving their sandals and clothes on the bank. When they did not return home for a long time, family members began searching. Upon reaching the pond, they found the sandals and clothes but could not find the children. After searching in the water, the bodies of the three children were recovered.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Jamdia village of Jamdia Union in Bagherpara upazila, Jashore. The three children drowned in the pond.
The deceased are Lamia Akhter, 13, and Sultana Akhter, 10, daughters of Nichar Ali from Jamdia village, and Fahima Khatun, 10, daughter of Ashikur Rahman from the same village. Lamia was a sixth-grader, Sultana was a fourth-grader, and Fahima was a third-grader.
Family members said Lamia, Sultana and Fahima went to bathe in a pond belonging to Fahima's grandfather, Ekram Mollah, around 12pm on Friday. The pond is located inside a garden, and fewer people bathe there. The children left their sandals and clothes on the bank before entering the water.
Abdur Rouf, grandfather of Lamia and Sultana, said the family members went looking for them when they did not return home for a long time. They found three pairs of sandals and clothes on the pond bank, but there was no trace of the children.
Locals then began searching in the water and eventually recovered the bodies. They were taken to Bagherpara Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared all three dead.
Bagherpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shah Jalal Alam confirmed the drowning deaths. Legal proceedings are ongoing.
