Three electrocuted by hanging wires over river

Three people have died and several others injured in electrocution incidents in two separate locations in Mirzapur, Tangail. The injured have been hospitalised.

The incidents occurred on Thursday night, July 16, in the Chakleshwar-Thalpara area of Fatepur union and in the Mundirapara area of Bahuria union.

The deceased are Jikul, 18, son of Hasmat from Sherpur; Sajjad, 18, from Rangpur; and Shushanto Rajbanshi, son of Nepal Rajbanshi from Bahuria, Mirzapur, who was electrocuted while fishing.

According to witnesses, about 40 young men from the Bhabal area of Gazipur came to visit the Moheda Zamindar Bari in Mirzapur by boat. On their return, the boat came into contact with an electric wire hanging over the river in the Thalpara area, electrocuting six people. Two of them collapsed on the spot. Locals rescued them and took them to Kumudini Hospital, where doctors declared Jikul and Sajjad dead. The other four are undergoing treatment.

In another incident on the same night, a fisherman went missing after coming into contact with a hanging electric wire while fishing in the river in the Mundirapara area of Bahuria union. His body was recovered by firefighters on Friday morning.

Mirzapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the incidents and said the bodies will be handed over to families after legal procedures.
