Three injured in Chhatra Dal clash over stage seating at JnU
Three students were injured when two factions of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal at Jagannath University clashed during a concert organised as part of a fresher reception, reportedly over seating on the stage.
The incident took place around 12:30am Thursday (September 17) in the Kathaltala area in front of the university’s Social Sciences Building.
The injured were taken to Dhaka National Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses said an argument broke out between followers of JnU Chhatra Dal Joint Conveners Mostafizur Rahman Rumi and Suman Sardar over stage seating during the concert. The dispute escalated into pushing and a physical altercation before turning into a clash between the two groups.
The injured were Tanzil Ahmed Mithil, a Mathematics Department student from the 2022-23 academic session, and Chemistry Department students Shawon and Monir. Hospital emergency department physician Kamal Hossain said all three received treatment, while two had head injuries. One was admitted to the surgery department for further treatment.
Suman Sardar said the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between senior and junior members and claimed the matter had later been settled internally.
The exact cause of the clash could not be independently confirmed. Attempts to contact Chhatra Dal convener Mehedi Hasan Himel and Joint Convener Mostafizur Rahman Rumi for comment were unsuccessful.
JnU Proctor Prof Dr Azam Khan said he was unaware of the incident and would take necessary action after learning the details.
